Founder’s Story

I founded WomensTrust in 2003, to celebrate turning age 60 which I had set as the official beginning of my “return phase” of life. My goal was to make the world fairer, to personally set out to Africa to break the cycle of poverty through education and entrepreneurship. I chose Ghana and connected to the village of Pokuase, a peri-urban community in the outskirts of Accra.

WomensTrust evolved into an NGO integrating microloans for women, education for girls, and healthcare. In 2008 we applied for the Purpose Prize and won a fellowship. It was a big lucky step into the world of philanthropy that was just going international. In 2010 I was surprised by an award from the oldest women’s financial institution in the world, the NY Bond Club, receiving the prestigious Isabel Benham Award for combined excellence in both the financial and the social change worlds. I stepped down as founder in 2012. WomensTrust continues today in Pokuase with a focus on education for girls and women.
